Home Child Safety Tips

Do not think that your baby is too tiny and move slow, or does not reach certain places. Do not forget that in a moment of distraction the unexpected can occur. The home is where most accidents occur. This is why is very important to organize our homes around child safety to prevent accidents. The most common dangerous places are the kitchen and bathroom, but we have to make the entire home safe for our little baby that is growing.

Children who had just started walking have busy minds compared to children of other ages. This means they are curious and like to explore around the house, but do not yet have the necessary knowledge to protect themselves against certain hazards, such as fire and heat sources, sharp objects or toxic substances. As I always said, “is better to prevent than to cure”. Here are some safety tips to prevent accidents at home:

• Think in kitchen safety. Keep knives and other sharp objects that may be in the kitchen, in locked cabinets outside the reach of children.
• Do not leave small objects on the floor or on tables, objects like (coins, buttons, beads ...). Crawling babies and children up to four or five years can choke if they get the object to the mouth or nose.
• Is important to close the bathroom door at all times, make sure you get a toilet lock.
• Cover electrical outlets with plugs or covers.
• Put a lock on the cabinets in which store cleaning supplies, or save these items in cabinets or cupboards too high.
• Do not leave objects on the stairs to avoid a fall.
• Install safety gates on stairs and in all entrances.
• Medicines and cosmetics must not be within reach of children.
• Keep your house always closed.
• When you are cooking, put the handles of pots and pans inward. As far as possible, always use the back burners.
• Close the windows of upper floors.
• Place the fans out of the little fingers of the child, because children could put his fingers in the fan blades and get hurt.
• Plastic bags and cables with which a child could get entangled should be held and kept out of reach of children.

These safety tips to protect children are just a starting point you have to look for other hazards that may exist in your home.
